Ask AI

Ask questions about your documentation in plain English, and let AI document things for you.

Ask AI answers questions using your documentation. It searches and reads what's in Knowpoint, then answers with links to the items it used, so you can check its work.

Open it from ✨ Ask AI in the sidebar, or from the Ask AI about… button on an organization's page to ask about that client only.

Good questions to ask

  • "What's the VPN setup at Contoso?"
  • "Which server runs the file shares at Harborview, and how is it backed up?"
  • "Which certificates and domains expire this month?"
  • "How do I restore a file from backup for Harborview?"
  • "Summarize Fabrikam's network for a new technician."

Ask follow-up questions in the same conversation, and it keeps the context.

Focus a conversation on one client

Use the organization picker at the top of the chat (or start from the client's Ask AI about… button) and Ask AI assumes your questions are about that client, so you don't have to keep naming it. You can still ask about other clients by name. Your conversations are listed on the left. Choose + New conversation to start again, or delete one you no longer need.

Let AI make changes

If your role includes Let AI make changes, you can ask Ask AI to document things for you:

  • "Document the new server HV-APP02 at 10.20.0.20, running Windows Server 2022."
  • "Write a reboot runbook for HV-DC01."
  • "Add Jane Smith as the office manager contact at Contoso, jane@contoso.example."
  • "Relate the backup runbook to every Datto backup at Harborview."

It can create and update documents, assets, flexible assets, contacts, locations and organizations, add tags and relate items. Each change appears as a link in the chat. It's recorded in the audit log as "AI: …" under your name, and document edits keep their version history.

What Ask AI can't do

  • It never sees password values. It can tell you a credential exists and where to find it, but not what the password is.
  • It can't delete anything.
  • It only sees what you can see: the organizations you have access to, minus restricted items you haven't been given.
  • It can't do anything your role doesn't allow.

Note: Like any AI, it can occasionally get things wrong. Its answers link to their sources, so check the source before you act on anything important.

Choose the AI provider

Admins choose which AI powers Ask AI, the AI writer and AI import in Admin → AI & API → Choose AI provider (you need Manage workspace settings):

Option What it means
Included with Knowpoint Nothing to set up (when your plan includes it)
Anthropic: your own key Claude models, billed to your Anthropic account. Create a key at console.anthropic.com.
OpenAI: your own key GPT models, billed to your OpenAI account. Create a key at platform.openai.com.
Off Hides Ask AI, the AI writer and AI import for everyone

With your own key, paste it in and choose Load models to pick from the models your key can use. When you save, Knowpoint sends one short test request, and nothing is saved if the key or model doesn't work. Keys are encrypted and never shown again. Switching provider keeps your conversations, and the same privacy rules apply to every provider.
